KUKRI KNIFE, THE KNIFE OF GURKAS

 

The kukri knife is descending of the Kopis Greek, which is taken to East by Alejandro Magno and adopted by the ethnic groups of Nepal.

Althought it is the most famous and feared knife of the world.

The kukri knife, older than is known, is in the Museum of Katmandú and belonged to Crack Drabya Shah, king of Gorkha, in 1627.

The kukri knife is the most famous weapon of the Nepal.  The boys to the short age of 5 years have their own Kukri knife and are capable in his handling.

At the moment which a Gurkha enters in the army the kukri knife becomes an extension of its arm. This knife is a tool that is used for everything, to cut wood, to hunt, to clear the weeds etc.

Each part of the Kukri knife has a cultural meaning and religious.

The weight, the balance and the adjustment of the Kukri knife is something crucial in their importance. 

The manufacture of this knife is very varied. Their blade vary much of quality, since for their elaboration, at the present time, is used a great variety of materials, like for example material railroader and crossbows of vehicles. The best ones dream up of steel of more discharge calidad quality.

The sheat can be adorned with engravings done of bones, ivory or metals.

The villagers work with much more heavy kukri knives, their cases usually are of simple wood and his blades less decorated.

The kukri knives do not have a system I specify of dimensions, usually they have between 28 and 30 cm. Excepting to the ceremonial kukri knives, denominated "konra". These ceremonial knives must have great dimensions and a cut very sharpened so that at the moment of the sacrifice the head of the buffalo separates of a clean cut.
