These
Marttiini knives are products of a prestigious tradition and are known

pocket knives stand out by its durability, its smart designs and its high
quality, doing them the perfect choice for many craftsmen and hunters.
The
company of Marttiini knives and penknives is without question one of the
principal manufacturers of quality fishing and hunting knives.
Janne
Marttiini was blacksmith who was born in a small town called Kierinki
situated in Northern Finland. He worked manufacturing scythes, axes, small
tools and handmade knives. In 1928 he founded own smithy
in
Rovaniemi and developed excellent models and methods of making knives. The
demand of these strong and good knives increased during the 1930’s and Janne
Marttiini was able to support his big family making knives and pocket
knives.
In 1940 it
was built a factory, which was destroyed during the World War II in 1944,
but later it was rebuilt in the middle of Rivaniemi. At present this factory
has been restored and it has become in a museum.

Janne Marttiini with his family. Marttiini founded its own
company of knives and pocket knives in 1928 in Rovaniemi (Finland).
Due to the
steady growth of the exportation business, it was necessary to enlarge the
facilities. In 1972 a modern plant was built. Today 65 people work in
Marttiini knives and it is managed by the third generation of the Marttiini
family.
Nowadays
Marttiini manufacturing more than 300 different knives and penknives, that
cover from the original Lynx, designed by Janne Marttiini to models with the
last novelties in technology and raw materials. Marttiini catalogue has
knives set aside to hunting, fishing, camping, household, professional use
and collectors. The manufacturing process still keeps the handmade
traditional features of the past, incorporating efficient product research
and modern development.
The diary
production is about 5.000 knives and pocket knives, ensuring the deliveries
of large quantities for the different countries around the world as U.S.,
Canada, Germany, Great Britain, the Scandinavian countries or Australia.
The
national and international competence is very straight. The high quality,
the long experience, the tradition, the special knowledge in the production
of knives and penknives combined with the continuous investigation and the
efficient development do Marttiini one of the most competitive signs in the
sharp weapons markets.
The blade
of the Marttiini
knives and penknives is world famous. Its good reputation comes from
the special Marttiini steel and the high quality of the process of
fabrication.
The blades
are manufactured with a special stainless chrome steel. To get the right
combination among chrome melted with another materials it has been necessary
doing a lot of proofs and studies.
The
tempering at just the right temperature ensures a strong and durable blade.
The
materials composition (that contains 13% of chrome and ensures that the
steel is absolutely stainless, durable and salt water resistant and acid
resistant) tempered between 54 and 56 on the Rockwell scale (HRC) is the
best combination for the manufacturing of blades of knives and penknives.
With a blade tempered under 54 HRC would be easier to sharper but it
wouldn’t be durable and the edge would be too flexible for an exigent use.
The tempering over 56 HRC would give to the blade more hardness but the
blade would be broken easier.
At present
Marttiini orders the steel from factories in Germany and France. In the
manufacturing process the sketches of blades are put through the rollers,
which change design of molecules from round to ellipse shape.
This
process causes that the metal composition is more density and therefore it
causes that the blades are more durables and more flexible and the edge is
longer.
In
Rovaniemi the tempered sketches of blades go through
the 7
different production stages until the blade is ready for the final hand
polishing. The blades are always hand sharpened by machine. This machine
adjusting requires ultimate carefulness and all time adjusting, and this
machine adjusting also requires a very high knowledge of blade sharpening.

Marttiini knives and penknives is continuously investigating
to get the best possible quality in the blades, the handles and knives and
pocket knives sheaths, as well as in its assemblies and its locker system.
All the
handles used in the Marttiini knives and pocket knives are manufacturing
directly by Marttiini in its headquarters in Laukka and Rovaniemi.
For the
handle manufacturing are used different kinds of wood materials.
Traditionally the handles are made with curly birch wood from Finland. The
curly birch used in the handles of the Marttiini knives and pocket knives
only grows in the middle of Finland. This hard material is very suitable for
the handles of the sharpen weapons, due to it is durable, beautiful and many
solicited. Because of the fact that the limited availability
of
this wood is more valuable than ordinary Finnish birch, which is other
material also used in large quantities. To satisfy the demands of the
international markets, Marttiini has used for years the other darker-tone
wooden materials like hazel and rosewood. These beautiful hardwoods give the
knife the valuable, more international expression.
As a
company located in Lapland, Marttiini has always wanted to highlight the
Lappish traditions and the arctic exotic. These features have inspired
designers in its collector knives development. These Marttiini decorative
knives and pocket knives have a rich combination of materials, reindeer horn
bone and curly birch. The handles
made by hand are decorated
by engravings and a mythological rattle inside the horn bone knob chases
away evil spirits. Each knife is an individual masterpiece.
Marttiini
knives and penknives has worked very much to found a great and durable cover
for the wooden handles. To better grip and protect the wooden handles have a
lacquer or oil coat.
This coat
protects the handles also from humidity and dirty. Marttiini used two
different kinds of lacquer: the cellulose lacquer or the new, plastic
lacquer. The cellulose lacquer is durable, very used and proportionate the
light yellow tone to the handles. The new plastic lacquer is not toxic, made
with water soluble materials and used for the new models as Golden Lynx.
This lacquer saves well the colour tone of the pale woods. The oil coat is
more suitable for the hardwood handles of knives as Bird or Deer. The oil
protects the handles but also ensures a great grip.
For the
last ten years, the plastic, the rubber and their combinations have been
gained ground. They are fit in handles, because the plastic and rubber
handles are easy, favourable and quick to produce. These materials fulfil
perfectly the requirements in the wet circumstances. These handles are also
hygienic, safe and secure and the grip is tough. These combinations offer
different kind feeling for grip: softer if there are more rubbish and more
solid if there are more plastic.
The
ferrules keep the handle and the blade together, covering the timber holes
and rivets. The materials utilised are nickel, brass, bronze, copper and
nowadays also plastic.
The sheath
of the Marttiini knives and pocket knives
covers and
protects the knife, as well as
protects the user to hurt
himself.
Marttiini has created the suitable sheath for each knife. The sheaths are
reinforced by rivets on the edge
of the
sheath, press-stud sticking, band round the sheath or plastic inner sleeve.
The most
utilised material in the sheaths of the Marttiini knives and penknives is
the bull skin. To find the leather of the best quality, Marttiini dedicates
many hours of work and numerous tests. Nowadays the material most utilised
in the Marttiinni sheaths come from Italy and Spain. The leather sheaths are
completely hand made. The sheaths are sewn using the milk glue to hold the
edges tight together.
To offer a
great selection of products Marttiini uses alternative materials for its
sheaths too. The plastic sheaths are manufactured to be resistant even
water-resistant. These sheaths are very practical and they protect perfectly
the knife. They are available in several colours.
Each
Marttiini knife and penknife pass a rigid quality control to have their
blades engraved with J Marttiini, Finland.
Today
Marttiini produces about 300 different models of knives and penknives, since
the original Lynx, manufactured by Janne Marttiini, until the modern designs
employing the last technologies and raw materials. The catalogue of
Marttiini sharp weapons cover hunting, fishing, camping, collection,
