800248 Buckler Steel Shield
Steel Buckler
“Bucklers” were small shields that were used in Europe from the 12th to the 17th century. Small in size, no wider than the fist holding it, the buckler was primarily used to parry an opponent"s attack rather than protect the body from attack. It could also be used to block the opponent"s weapons and even to protect the hand that wielded the sword to hide his position. This made it difficult for the opponent to plan the attack and made it difficult for him to move, thus favoring fast fighting. The Buckler became the ideal shield choice as the size of weapons began to decrease and fast fighting became popular due to the development of firearms. This Buckler is made from 1.3mm thick (18 gauge) steel with a wooden handle. The shield could be hung from the scabbard or sword belt when two hands were needed for a pike or staff weapon. So widespread was its use that the practice of the sword and the shield became one of the most common sports of the Renaissance.
