Roman Belt - Leather Strips - Ref 200468

This Roman belt, known as the Cinculum Militaire, is primarily ornamental. This type of belt was widely used by the soldiers of the Roman army to gird their tunic and hang their weapons. It consisted of a studded leather belt adorned with pteryges or groin protections that consisted of a variable number of hanging straps that were sometimes highly decorated metal disks and rings. Such was its importance that it became a distinctive sign of the Roman soldiers who wore it with pride, whether they carried weapons or not, and which indicated their military status.
